War, famine, pestilence, death. Not in 1000 years, not in 100. Probably only 20 or so. Oil, bucko, is the fuel of this civilization, and clean water is getting short as well. When the power goes off and stays off, water doesn't get pumped. Do you know the location of the nearest natural source of potable water? Without water, toilets don't flush, and the cities will be dying of typhoid in just a week.
Those neighbors of yours? Many parts are edible.

First define overpopulated. If it reaches some critical mass where we are stepping all over each other, unless we have made some significant technological progress to enable us to feed and clothe ourselves, we may outgrow the food supply. Famine and disease may take care of the problem. However, this has been talked about for a couple of hundred years now, and it hasn't happened yet. Also, Al Gore and His Traveling Paranoia Show notwithstanding, global warming is at best a theory, and at worst, possibly a benefit (longer growing seasons, etc.), but nowhere near the catastrophe waiting to happen. For a terrific book, try "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton. It is FICTION, but VERY well researched and heavily footnoted. It brings a bit of light and sense to the rhetoric.

You don't need to wait a 1,000 years to find out what will happen. In 50 years, at our current rate of growth, we'll be somewhere around 10-15 billion souls, mostly in the third world countries. There'll be no more fossil fuels, coal and other raw materials. What few resources that will be left will be fought over by the earthly inhabitants... A cataclysmic event is the only solution at that point, most likely wars and plagues, but possibly by an over-due hit by an asteroid/super volcanoe or one of the other 4 horsemen of the apocalypse....

we must adapt. Besides if civilization keeps growing to a First World level globally the population will drop as it does in most modern countries as contraception and work nullify parenthood. So they estimate the population if-for example-it had the growth rate of Germany, would drop to 3-4 billion globally.

Itll take longer than that to overpopulate tthe earth. Vast areas of the planet are uninhabited and above sea or undersea cities could be developed as population crunch becomes a concern.. We will just spread out in space. Either space stations, moonbase or other planets.
