It is not only time, in my view it is long overdue. Despite her apparently great popularity (which is really a myth) Queen Elizabeth II has nothing to show for in her 53 years on the throne. No great achievements or ground-breaking events, and nothing in her personal capacity. She is in fact one of the most boring women in the world.
In contrast to her, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, is a very intelligent, highly trained and motivated, and a deeply caring man. He is concerned with the environment, agriculture, architecture, the arts, philosophy, politics, social issues and much more. But he is kept from doing a lot of good by his stubborn mother who believes she has to sit on the throne until she dies.
Therefore history repeats itself. Like the dull Queen Victoria, who also did nothing of her own to change the world, Elizabeth II did inherit the throne as a very young woman and occupies it until her death in old age. And like Edward VII, Charles will be himself already an elderly man when he finally gets his chance. And like Edward VII, who was frustrated by his mother and fled into a life of adventures, affairs and escapades, Charles will not live long enough to make an impact and bring his ideas to work.
Both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II are living examples against a heriditary monarchy (and George V and George VI did not much for it either). It is about time for Britain to leave the 19th century and arrive in the present, which has no use for dull and uninspiring Queens prancing around in bright yellow and bright pink dresses like nightclub dancers and block the progress of political development.

Actually, it is time for the English monarchy to abdicate in favor of the people. With very few exceptions, the behavior of most English monarchs has been less than sterling --- philanderers, rapists, murderers and enslavers of entire populations. The characer of the English people changed with every major dynasty with their founders almost always from alien lands - Germans, French Normans. I can name only one English monarch whose morals were beyond reproach - Edward the Confessor.

I think she will die ( and should ) as the ruling head of England. She is most likely hoping that she can outlive Charles, so that William will be King before his father. Since her own mother lived to be over 100, I don't see her leaving anytime soon.

Why should she abdicate? Because she's getting old? Who cares? No one would ask that if a man was on the throne right now.

NO! She's still sharp enough. Also except for her uncle Edward VIII, her family tends to die in harness. If she is incapacitated, a regent (Chuck) may be appointed, but she will remain the reigning monarch. Ironically, HIS motto is "Ich Dien," "I serve."
