peavey is good bang for the buck. don't get cheap fenders (like a squier) or ibanez - they'll fall apart. the fenders made in mexico ain't bad for a beginner...

Why even make a choice? As I'm sure you know, bass is simply the last 4 strings of a guitar...with the exact same tuning. I don't know a single bass player who does not also play the guitar. As others have said...bass players are far more rare, so a girl with your looks would be able to command a lot more gigs and chances with better bands, and the opportunity to play with better musicians, which will only improve your ability. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. I will add...most consider it a bit more difficult to sing and play bass. It's generally easier to strum a guitar chord and sing, then to play a pattern of individual notes on bass and sing at the same time. Don't let that discourage you...if you concentrate on bass....do not neglect your singing...if a girl, who looks as you do, can sing AND play bass, you could conquer the world! LOL Hell, I might even kick my bass player out of the band and hire you? Generally...the low end Fenders are considered very good brands for the money, but it's up to individual choice.

Definitely get a Fender bass. They are THE standard in the electric bass world and they sound good with any type of music that uses electric bass. They are also the easiest to customize or modify if you would like to add personal touches. Make sure to get a 4-string they play the best (and who really needs a 5th string, the low B sounds like crap because it is sooo muddy). My friend who is a great bass player prefers to play his Precision bass over his very expensive Carvin because he likes the sound and enjoys plaing it more. Even if you can get a slightly "better" bass for a little less from a different company, you can't go wrong with a Fender bass.

I have to go with the majority and say Fender. The P-Bass is a very versitile bass with an excellent broad-ranging tone. It produces very capable punk sounds, but also has the ability to perform in other genres if your interests change. If you have a fair amount of money to spend, an American P Bass will probably last longer than you. Also, should you take my advice and decide I have no idea what I'm talking about, the Fender will have a higher resale value than other competitors in the same price range.

I suggest you get a Fender Precision bass. They're really versatile and sound wicked awesome!
Just make sure you get the right amp to go with your bass--the right amp makes all the difference.

Yeah you ussually can't go wrong with fender, that is your best bet. Fender Mustangs are good as well, but they are a shorter scale bass.
