If you want to be secure, I would suggest feeding them through a paper shredder. Newer shredders have a special slot for CDs and DVDs. Also, don't just get a shredder that does strips, you definitely want a crosscut shredder.

There is no environmental impact created by landfilling CDs/DVDs other than the addition of material to the landfill. A CD/DVD cannot be recycled because of the foil layer(s) inside.

You could reuse them by making stuff like:
a mosaic end-table
sand the edges down to make guitar picks
coasters!
Experiment with them. Do they melt? Make little cd bowls! Paint them. Decorate stuff with them. Get the drift?
The most environmentally responsible thing to do with waste is to simply have less waste.
If you really do want to recycle them, I think they are considered a plastic. Call your local recycling center.

wow very good question i love saving mother earth and i think anything anyone can do to clean it up or protect it they should try their hardest at doing i'm not sure about cd's or dvd's but i'm hoping they have some kind of recycling for them along with glass carboard newspapers and many other items good question i'll look into this more

call your local city or county government. they may have drop off points to discard them
i'm using a computer at our loacal public library. here the recycle cds and dvds by using them in arts and crafts for the kids.

Use them in creative ways to make things for your home. new papershreddeers have slots and blades just for shredding cds.
also ive found that cd's are sorted all the time out of regular trash.
