the router takes care of the hard stuff, as long as both computers are set up to dhcp then just right click properties sharing enables files and folders, then just browse the network

Use the XP wizard to set up the Win98 computer. It will create a disk to load on the older system. It's actually pretty good. Just follow the directions carefully.
My setup has both computers attached to the router. You can have the XP computer serve as your internet host, though it is probably not the best idea.

After everything is set, make sure you set your firewalls on both PCs to allow the computers to communicate. And watch out for the built in XP firewall. It's amazing how checking a box can cause so much aggravation.

Good Luck

Sounds like you are almost there. You have the cable modem hooked to your router. You then hook both computers to the routers.

Next you need to right click on the icon for the C Drive of your computer (Click on the My Computer icon to see it). Click on Properties and go to the sharing tab. Share the drive giving permission to be able to cahnge files.

Do the same on the other computer

Now if you click on the My Network Places icon on the XP machine (or the Neighwork Neighborhood Icon on 98) you should be able to see the hard drive of the other computer.

Simple drag and drop the files between the two computers
