My own view is that it's just kvetching to minge on about the costs, which FOX and Limbaugh have greatly exagerrated, when we don't know about the results of the operation. If the guy brings back 50 or 100 billion worth of business and spends a few hundred million on the trip, only a rube would think America got a bad deal. Not everything that happens in the universe must occur at the kitchen table economics level so that everybody in the trailer park thinks the spending makes sense in their terms. Some deals are big. India is a place where it does pay to go in riding 1000 elephants. I know the culture, travelled around the country on a bicycle. Familiar with the history. It's a Durbar. If you want street cred in India as a guy who can deliver, you put on a Durbar, with 1000 elephants, and warships, and bugles, and horsemen, and carpets -- it's comme il faut (how things should be done). He's not going over there as a black guy off the streets of southside Chicago. He's the voice of America. He speaks and the mountains shake. Without that, closing deals is a lot harder. No this is not about military or security. If the Pakis thought that, we would be ruined in Afghan/Pakistan. Yes this is about connecting to the business community in USA, including small businesses. No this will not take away jobs from India. Yes, it will add them, but hopefully on a basis of reciprocity, where jobs are added for Americans as well. Obama is playing the role of Trade Negotiator. All of our Trade Negotiators for 25 years have been Noodle-Spined Weak as Water Empty-Handed Schmoos, that got eaten, and never ate anything or anybody. Obama is stepping it to the breach and trying to get that job done for a change. India is a dress rehearsal. He wants to learn how to do it. Once he knows, he'll take on China. 2010 Mumbai India 2011 Peking China Jobs is Problem One for Him right now. His approach is rational, patriotic, not evil, and may turn out very well. So in the meantime the folks up in the hollers can keep their yaps shut -- bunch of hillbillies.
