I don't believe so. I know that I can record my Fm Radio without having earphones in. I have a Creative Zen Micro, and it doesn't make any sense to have the earphones being in as necessary to record.

Maybe. I have a Creative Zen Vision M and when the signal is weak it says Antenna (headphones) is not connected. I just tried it right now.

In this case the headphone wires are needed to act as an antenna for the FM radio.

In other situations, it may be the case that the signal is strong enough to work without the headphones as an antenna.

No they dont, but you might want to have the headphones plugged in so you can make sure that whatever your recording doesnt sound distorded or anything like that, and you might need to have them in so you can know when the song is over, but if you have another radio around then you can hear on it and stop the recording when you hear it stops on the other radio.
