These come as a pair, you can't choose no other way. It's either to start off your franchise team to build a dynasty. John Elway and Barry Sanders or Joe Montana and Jerry Rice! All four are legends in their positions. However, you're keeping this team for some years and later you can always make trades to get better players and draft picks to add around your franchise players. Whose your franchise duo? I know Elway never played on the same team as Sanders but Sanders always needed someone extra as well to get him there! Super Bowl. This is tough I know, I made it tough for you guys to decide.

Well, I mean Barry Sanders never won anything which means he can't even be considered. Plus, he quit so while he was a wonderful player he isn't in this conversation. Jon Elway almost falls into the same category. I mean he didn't win until the end and it took a great RB like Terrell Davis to get him over the top. You can't go by stats cuz I mean Emmitt Smith is the greatest RB of all time by stats, but he wouldn't be in my top 10 all time. Joe Montana is the greatest player ever. He was 4-0 in the superbowl. He was clutch. Jerry Rice is probably 2nd just because of his work ethic and his ability to produce every year.

Using NFL.com point allotments, the following points would total up (not including Fumbles Lost since those stats were not listed for three of the players - so point values are slightly skewed by this missing data):

Montana/Rice: 6866 (3269 + 3597)
Elway/Sanders: 6418 (3945 + 2473)

The dynamic duo of Montana and Rice outdueled Elway and Sanders. However, it wasn't a lopsided comparison. Elway's statistics crushed Montana and Rice's point totals blew Sanders away. Elway and Rice combined would be 7542 against Montana and Sanders totaled at 5472. Under other point designation rules, such as Yahoo!, the totals would be less since yardage is not as highly valued in those leagues (twice as many yards are needed for the same point total; i.e. 25 passing yards = 1 pt in NFL.com whereas Yahoo! rates 1 pt = 50 passing yards).

It wasn't that tough, but also remember that RB and WR could be on the same team. Imagine Elway, Sanders, AND Rice ... total point value: 10015.

Any questions?

Elway and Sanders. Why? Until TD came along, John had no good rb. And with Berry, he played for the
Lions and was still great.
The Niners had a huge payroll. Makes a difference with who you're surrounded by.

Barry Sanders, the single greatest player of all time. All defensive schemes were to stop the run and he would still embarass the squads.
