Trying to get rid of the whine and / or grind from a GM starter is a pain.
The spec. book says 5/32" is the clearance needed between the solenoid and the flywheel
You can try to engage the solenoid and measure the clearance.
If you don't have a guage you can use a 5/32" drill bit (shank end) to check the clearance.
This is hard to do unless some one teaches you.
Or do it the old school way and stay under the vehicle and add and remove shims as needed. Also try half shims. This is problem on most GM vehicles, I have been putting these in for 30 years and half the time I need to remove and or add shims.
Every GM vehicles is different because of tolerances at this area. There is no quick fix on this just do it until it's works correctly
