Actually, it's a visor, and it's filthy!! I've heard of these molds you can buy that keep the hat in shape while you wash it. Can you put it in the washing machine or the dishwasher? Would that make the visor part go soft? Otherwise, would dry-cleaning spray work?

Hi, Jen...

I would definitely not put the baseball cap in the washing machine or dishwasher, if it has a visor. I've seen these damaged from machine agitation before, so I wouldn't risk it. What I would do, is allow it to soak for a long period of time in a small container of some sort, big enough to hold it - for a few hours, at least, in cool water with an active oxygen agent added to the water. After a scrub and rinse, if need be, I would repeat the soak, for which I advise you use an enzymatic laundry detergent, along with some of that "unbleach" (active oxygen bleach) and/or some "Oxy-Clean" powder, which ought to work very well.

I've soaked very dirty, stained, and odiferous trainers in such a solution, and had them end up looking and smelling like brand new shoes again, which impressed me!! After the long soak, I would scrub the baseball cap and visor with a gentle brush or terrycloth for a little while, then rinse well, and hang or sit it outside in bright sunlight to dry - this also helps to clean, disinfect and deodorize the fabric very nicely. Hope this is helpful...

All the best,

~ Elaine

I use those molds (or frames), and it works well. I "Spray n Wash" (or whatever) the dirty hat, and put in in the washing machine on gentle, hot water if it's not a fabric with white and also a color that will bleed. If so, warm water. Use regular laundry detergent.
Then just hang it or set it in the sun to dry. I've not tried the dryer, but I think that sounds too rough for the visor.
It has never made the bill go soft on mine. It comes out well. I've used the dishwasher before, and it did a lousy job.

if it's fabric simply use a soft bristled brush and mild diluted soapy water(dab it on with sponge) and brush in the direction of the grain. it usually comes clean if it's just soiled from sweat or dirt grime. some spot remover if a bad stain. then rinse and place over an upside down sauce pan of the appropriate size and in a day you're favorite visor will look like new! (if you do the inside band wrap the inside in paper towels folded over the edge before you place in on the pan....i do this with my golf and baseball caps all the time...they last for years this way)

i've used both the dishwasher and washing machine for my husbands hats and found the best was the washing machine on gentle or delicate cycle. after it is washed turn a bowl upside down and and place the hat on it just like it was your head, but for a visor, which i've never done but i would think the top rack in the dishwasher would be better and before it reaches the dry cycle take it out and place it on a bowl to dry, the only thing is that with a dishwasher you may not be able to control the temp. as well as you would be with a washing machine.

Clean by hand or throw it out and buy a new one. Caps shrink and unless you want to put a wet hat on your head, I wouldn't wash it. Just get a new one, well, I guess it could be adjustable, then you wouldn't have to worry about shrinking. I was thinking of fitted caps. I don't wear adjustable caps.

The best way is to get one of those 'molds' then throw it in either the dishwasher or washing machine, either is fine. However don't be surprised if the color fades when you wash it, hats are not meant to be washed so the dyes are less durable than regular clothing.

DON'T put it in the washing machine. I did that with one of my caps and it screwed up the lining, and I had to throw it out. Try washing and drying it manually.

"spot cleaning", where you clean a certain stain on your visor with soap and water. If it's a white visor, use a Clorox Bleach Pen.
