First of all, hacking is not a clearly defined word. It originally referred to very skilled programmers and computer engineers, but another meaning was adopted by the media some time in the 80s. Now it usually refers to criminal activity.
Second, you seem to already have the idea in mind that hacking is password cracking, a criminal activity. Knowing how to hack is not criminal (in fact, you can get paid fairly well for preventing other hackers from succeeding), but the practice of it is very often illegal.
If you are really interested in computer security, but not any criminal activity, I suggest you look at http://www.cert.org/ If you are really interested in becoming a criminal hacker, I strongly suggest you reconsider. The penalties are very severe, and the US government has a lot of leeway in prosecuting you. Even if you can beat the charges, they can still cause you a tremendous amount of inconvenience.

I suggest you not say or try to learn about trying to hack another computer. You can get in a lot of trouble.

so you want to be a hacker? check out any hacker form you either aren't on are you are one. hacking is not what you see in the movies and on TV. Hackers and Swordfish are good movies but its just not like that. all a hacker is, is a person who tinkers with computers and electronics and fugues out how things work on their own. hackers are commonly confused with crackers which are the idiots who write the malicious code an break in to stuff. you want to be a hacker check out any book on computer security and learn how stuff works. check out file sharing for free stuff. or spend the $2,500 to take a LEGAL ETHICAL Hacker class.
