Look in the "world cinema" section there are lots of good films made in Europe which don't get much of a mention in mainstream cinemas. I recently bought a DVD called Malena which is an Italian film. It does have a few brief nude scenes but nothing distasteful and its well worth a view. Without giving too much away its about a beautiful woman who becomes widowed during the war and causes lots of gossip in a small town.

Withnail & I - this is an absolute must and I'll be astonished if you don't love it (and surprised if you haven't seen it)

Amateur and Henry Fool by Hal Hartley - deliciously strange. Amatuer is smoother, Henry Fool is a little more squalid.

O Auto Da Compadecida if you can get it and if you can figure out how to put the subtitles on

Most Coen Brothers films (but I hated Fargo - it was just pointlessly gruesome)

Here are a few small-budget/indie flicks that may interest you: The Secret Lives of Dentists, Born into Brothels, Momento, Adaptation...also try browsing Netflix online. You will find an independent section as well as a documentary section; should give you some great ideas.

The Chumscrubber. It's a superb movie with great acting from a few well-known and talented actors. Explores the struggles of upper-class suburban families and it does so amazingly. Not many have seen it, but its genius.

Irreversible. Not too great if you're epileptic, but well worth watching and gives a new meaning to the old fashioned happy ending.

Also, Donnie Darko is well worth watching. Jake Gyllenhaal will not get any better than this (gay shepherd. well I never).
