I have been thinking for some time now about taking in a alligator as a pet. Have done alot of reading up on it and all and I am willing to take the measures needed to provide the space, enviroment, etc needed. But would like to hear from an actual owner or previous alligator owners first hand experience.

Well, first off, make sure your state law allows you to keep an alligator as a pet. If they are banned as pets (almost always within city limits), you will probably have to apply for an exhibitors license (technically make the gator an exhibition animal, not a pet). This may require you to go to a school or local 4H club with your gator and do an educational *exhibit* once a year (basically go in and talk about gators, not hard). I know in New York state we have some of the strictest bans, but you can get around them with the exhibitor licenses, etc... I used to own 3 American Alligators, and they were wonderful creatures but sadly had to leave them back in South Carolina because of the laws in New York State (although I know now how to obtain the proper permits to get around it, they just don't like to let you know that). Hope this helps some.

I own owned caimans and crocs... alligators are cool, but they get big. Are you gonna be one that buys it and then dump it when it gets too big? I have an indoor 1000G pond made of wood. The most important thing is check with you local laws and also be ready to house them when they get big, but that takes many years though.
