It has been my experience that they are caused by dehydration and/or a need for potassium.. Try drinking fluids and eat some banannas which is a good source of potassium.

Preventitive: Lots of Water and Potassium ( Bananas)

Stretching can help prevent them. I know taking Valproic Acid helps some people but you need to have a prescription for it.

I believe that a charlie horse is caused when there is a lack of blood in a certain part of the body. That "needle" sensation, I believe, is the blood rushing in. I wouldn't sit on yourself. . .LOL!

you cant really prevent them. they could happen for many reasons. vitamin deficiency, overexertion, dehydration, or low blood sugar. you can relieve them by massage or using ice. i get them a lot during the night but i just reposition my foot/calf til it goes away.

You need to eat bananas and drink some milk. That is what my doctor told me to do.

I have no idea but I have them when I am sleeping. It could be caused from poor circulation.
