Yesterday afternoon I had a mass removed from my right leg approx. two inches down from my knee. In the process the doctor cut thru a blood vessel. He tried to stop the bleeding with gauze but eventually had to clip each end with hemos and then tie down the vessel to stop the bleeding. Under his breath I heard him say "I knew I was going to do that". It still continued to bleed, but he stiched me up anyway. He never mentioned cutting the vessel, eventhough he knew I was watching the whole thing. Now I am my leg has been oozing blood thru the stiches, but only on the end where cut the vessel. I have tried contacting a local ER but the nurses will not give out advice over the phone and I do not feel comfortable calling the doctor as the take home instructions say it may ooze for up to 48 hours. I am most certain that cutting thru a vessel was not part of the plan when those instructions were written tho. When do I need to become concerned?
Serious replies only plz.

I'm not anxious over this, just unfamiliar and feel I was not given all the info.
Also, I was administered a local of lidocane w/ epinephrine, and two other numbing agents (I cant remember names). I sat up and watched the whole thing.

You should become concerned after 48 hours. Post surgical oozing is not uncommon, thus, the 48 hour wait. Also, post surgical anxiety is a normal reaction.

Now.
Anytime you loose confidence in you doctor, or you treatment it is your right and you responsibility to pursue a solution until you are satisfied.
This may be normal, it may not be.
It is not legal to give medical advice if you are not a doctor & it is not resposible to give medical advice to someone you have never met and examined. No reputable medical professional will do this.
If you don't feel confident contacting your doctor, contact another doctor. If you don't know who to contact, go to the local ER today and have the physician on call there examine it and determine if there is or is not a problem.
If you think this could be a Malpractice issue, get a copy of your medicalfile from the doctor & hospital NOW, if you wait until after you decide to pursue legal action, the records might get "lost."
Good luck.

You should call a lawyer about it. You could get the doctor for malpractice. He could have made a mistake. I would go and get another doctor's opinion and go into the ER too. You need to start this process quickly cause some doctors thinks they can get away from it. I hope you the best of luck.

This comes from my experiences with friends (and non-friends) from other countries. Many many people do not like our government. However, many people can also make the distinction that the decisions of the American government do not necessarily reflect the American people. I've asked this question to a lot of my friends who do not live in the US and they recognize that Americans are like anyone else. To quote my friend who lives in Madrid when I asked him this question, "there are some good ones and there are some bad ones, like everywhere else." Oh, but one of the other answers reminded me of something funny and non-political. I sent a size L shirt to my friend in Madrid, and he was shocked that it was a Large. "L's there are XL's here... Americans must be big people." ...just thought that was kind of cute. Just a quick note in response to something someone else said: the attacks on the Metro in Madrid did not change the outcome of the Spanish elections in 2004, which brought the PSOE to power. They may have brought more people out to vote, but the PP and Anzar did more to remove themselves from power than any terrorist attack ever could have. Give the Spanish more credit; Spaniards were overwhelmingly not in favor of the war to begin with. The PSOE campaigned with a promise to remove Spanish troops from Iraq if they gained control of the government. They did, and Zapatero kept the promise. Maybe some people don't like some Americans because some of them don't care to actually know a little more about a sitaution before drawing rash conclusions.

My suggestion would be that if the bleeding continues, find another hospital/different doctors and go there. And if the damage is serious, look into a malpractice suit.

I would go to the emergency room and have another doctor look at it. If you are not comfortable with the situation then you need to do something about it. No one knows your body like you do.

get yourself in person to the er and express your concerns about the procedure - they won't send you away broken and bleeding if there is an unresolved problem they will err on the side of caution

I would see another doctor and get him to explain it to you. If he did screw up find out what to do medically then legally.
