The Poseidon Movie is totally fiction, but it is based on a book by Paul Gallioe or something. Whether the book is based on a true story or not, no one is saying a word. I only the Poseidon Movie from the original 1970's movie with Gene Hackman.

The Poseidon Adventure was based off of Paul Galieco's 1969 novel that was made into the 1972 Blockbuster Disaster Film, that also started the 70's Disaster Genre, The Story is centered around after The S.S. Poseidon was struck by the 90ft. tidal wave and them struggling to saftey.
Paul Galieco the aurthur of the novel based the capszing on the real life acount on the Queen Mary back in WWII while of the coast of Greece when a freak wave struck the ship and fliped it upside down, if the ship had stayed under for more than two mintues she would capszied like the Poseisdon.

The Poseidon was based off the Queen Mary, infact she is the Queen Mary all the pre-capszing scenes where filmed aboard her.

No...it's just fantasy...but it is a great movie. Intense, but great. It is impossible for that to actually happen because the wave started breaking and that's why it flipped the ship over. The only place that can happen is really near to the shore when the water is really shallow. If a big wave in the ocean came to a boat like that, it would be like a giant hill, and you would just float over it. No worries...it can never happen.

It's just a story. The movie is a remake of an earlier Poseiden Adventure movie.
