Well, I dont know about all American churches but at ours we take up money and pray to God and he leads us where it should be spent.
However, we do have a food pantry and we occasionally do "Love Drives" where we gather things for the homeless or those who may of had house damage due to tornado, hurricane, etc. We let anyone who asks, into the food pantry. A few times we've also allowed people to stay a few nights in the church while they found somewhere to go.
Hope I Helped :]

Ok 1st off i am wondering how you live there at all if you dont have a job. But either way thats neither here nor there, cause obviously you have the problem and another thing , where do you get online if your life is in such shambles.... but here is what you do , you can find some where to give plasma or something , have a garage sale, cause if your homeless you wont need that stuff anyway... pick up cans or bottles or whatever .. but really i would start to pray really hard and see what comes of all your hard work. Get out there and figure it out its life... good luck :)

because alot of homeless people are homeless because they choose to be that way. Anybody can work a job and also they have all kinds of programs that help people find homes. People like hand outs and that is why churches dont hand out so much anymore. I know my church gives money to a shelter that will use it to help people pay for groceries and pay a light bill...we also dont hand money over to people......bunch of free loaders I say!!!!

Catholic charities, Salvation Army, many homeless shetlers, food banks are run by churches or their members.
I have attended 4 churches in the past 12 years. All have had one or more of the following: food bank, homeless shelter, clothing supply for free, school supply give a way.
BTW...They were all conservative churches who also gave to help the less fortunate overseas.

Churches take up money to pay the rent, utilities, budgets for youth groups, Bible School, teaching books, etc. and other projects... and to pay the minister a salary.
Most churches have budgets that take care of those that are having a hard time, It depends on the amount taken up as how much a church can help.

They do. We have a special collection each month to help the poor and homeless in our community. Plus, we always have food at the church for anyone in need. There are also, special collections to help people in various parts of the world for regular aid and disaster aid.

They have huge operating expenses. They pay the pastor and whatever staff they hire, insurance on the buildings-usually plural, since they often own the pastor's house, too. Maintenance costs-my church just paid thousands just to have their stained-glass windows cleaned and retouched and we had to replace two heaters within the past five years. It adds up. Many churches hardly have anything left over for mission work.

that is a generalization of the churches in America. the churches in my area have set up a food bank that helps feed many local residents. they also have a clothing center which helps with clothes.
