Put a bowl with beer in it near the plants they are eating. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, crawl into it and drown.
Here's a website with more anti-slug tips.

Even though I hate the blighters I can't bring myself to salt them, it's just too cruel, I also disagree with putting down poison so the only other way is to plant sacrificial plants, i.e. plants chosen to be eaten and leave the ones you dont want eaten, alone. This works to a large extent, you're always going to have some plants nibbled but not on such a huge scale. Clear all garden debris away, this is what initially attracts them and if you have an enclosed compost heap they'll do it good and will happily live there for months. Also, as mentioned on another page, like the snails they seem to like dry cat food! If you have pond, get a few toads and frogs in, they'll polish them off at night, especially the toads. Hedgehogs are also very partial to slug, so are badgers and foxes. There are many different types of slug, there are some that prey on other slugs. Not all slugs are vegetarian, there are those that not only each other but any decaying animal matter.
You'll never totally eliminate them, they need to eat to survive like everything else, as well as being an important source of food for other creatures, but you can control their numbers. Good luck.

I had a massive (really major), slug problem when we moved to this house and could find no reliable way of killing them, also I was both forgetful about putting down slug killer and a bit squeamish, as well as not liking the thought of what the chemical controls do to other life in the garden. So, I now avoid growing anything slug-prone in the beds and keep things like hostas in containers and fountain. This way I don't have to worry and the slugs and snails can be healthy food for other animals. So, instead of spending on slug control have a look around and spend your garden budget on the slug-proof equivalent to favourite plants. For example, if you love delphiniums grow aconitum instead...there is always something you can grow in this way and you'll have the fun of discovering new plants and broadening your range of plant knowledge.

Sounds funny but put some beer in a dish.....the'll pass out over in the weeds somewhere and leave yer flowers alone.
I use Red Pepper.....though you have to do it often cause the water dilutes it when the sprinklers go on!
Copper is also something that Snails and slugs don't like.
They won't cross it because it causes a galvanic shock similar to that experienced when you bite a piece of aluminum foil with a metal filling. Surround planting beds, tree trunks and containers with a strip of coperfoil, screen, or tape from 2 to 4 inches wide. You can find it usually at your hardware store. Don't let any part of the plant to touch it though. The copper will turn green out in the sun but it will still work for years!
For poisons you can try Ortho Bug-Geta Snail & Slug Killer.
If you don't see them, on the plants....look for wetter area of different plants there not eatting on, they could be hiding there...so put poison there. Try putting it around the perimeter of your house....so more of those buggin' don't get in or can't excape and munch on yer neighbors plants.
Let me know if you need more ideas..... I've got lots of gardening books.!!

Use small drink plastic bottles and put some beer (any kind) in them. Make a groove in the soil and lay the bottle almost all the way down. Slugs love beer. They will go into the bottle and drown, but happily. The next morning all you have to do is throw the bottles and dead slugs away. Put out several throughout your garden, keep putting them out until you no longer catch any slugs. By putting the beer in bottles, pets or animals won't get into the beer. That should take care of the slugs. I hope this helps.

Slug bate is a double edge sward. While it kills them, it also attracts them. I've used it with great success, but the trick is to use it for an extended amount of time and don't place it too close to the plant.
I start with my bate in the early spring, and place it about a foot from the plants. In places where the planting is too close I keep it as far away as possible from the base of the plants.
There are a couple of other things that do work very well. Little bowls of beer is a sure fire way to kill. They can't resist beer.
Take a grapefruit, cut in half, spoon out the meat, and place upside down in the garden. In the morning, you will find a bunch of them... just toss out.
For potted plants a wide band of copper, will often repeal them. However, they will just move on to another plant that isn't protected.
Salting them does work, but is a real pain not to mention not feasible for larger gardens.

i thought that i had already answered this question, i hate the slimey little critters but do not want to put down any pellets as it may harm my cats. the song thrushes and the hedgehogs that live around my home,
with this in mind i approached my garden centre about the problem and they supplied me with a sachet of NEMA-SLUG, this is a natural predator of slugs and all you have to do is mix the contents of the sachet into a watering can of water and with a fine rose just apply to the area of the garden that is most seriously infested and leave the predator to do the rest.
i did my garden 2 months ago and now i rarely see a slug, but the hedgehog family is thriving well and the songthrush keeps bringing its young into my garden and sings on my fence.
so give it a try, it is slightly expensive but it definately works and according to the garden centre the parasite will overwinter in the soil for many years to come so i look forward to many slug free years to come and so van you.

Dont use salt its not nice. Put a pliat or you can get special tubs from garden centers with some beer in it that will draw them away to drink it and die drunk, a bit better than burning to death with salt. Or put some lettuce leaves or cabbage whatever you have lying around near you're plants then they will eat that instead, then you're happy and no slugs will be harmed in the presurving of you're plants.

Salt will kill the slugs but it is not good for the plants. A saucer of beer is the trick I've heard that works best.
