The microprocessor is the engine that 'computes' everything. It's mostly rated in mHz speed, - and that's like how fast your car engine is going. But another factor is design. Intel designs and manufactures it's idea of a microprocessor, while AMD does the same.
So, both manufacturers could have the same 3.0 mhz microprocessor, and the AMD internal design has faster results, becuase of it's internal design.
A few other concepts, besides raw mHz of the microprocessor is chipset, FSB, video, Harddisk, memory type / qty., and a few others.
