Nicholas Negroponte's "$100 laptop computer" will cost about $135 when it becomes available. The $100 laptop is an education project for creating an inexpensive laptop computer intended to provide every child in the world access to knowledge and modern forms of education.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,
the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.
these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.
one such website for laptop computers is :

ok, I'm 14, and I personally don't think an 11 year old should be trusted with a laptop... 11 year old's normally are not responsible enough to handle such equiptment, perhaps in a few years, 13-15 age range, but not 11...

I personally think 11 is too young for a laptop. I like to monitor my kids computer usage. I have very good children, compared to most in society today and they still tend to get into places they shouldn't be if I don't keep a close eye on them.

Probably the best bet here is to buy a "Factory Refurbished" laptop. They are brand name, used, and not too expensive. So, if they get wrecked, your not out a big pile of money!

I just bought my 12-year old an Apple iBook (12-inch). Got it on sale for less than $800, and it's very mobile!
