Ok, here's the deal. I work landscaping for many years and poison ivy was not a favorite and mostly people call us to get rid of it.

Here is how and I better get the best answer award for this one!

1) DO NOT burn them. Very bad. It can get in your throat and you can get poison ivy on your throat!
2) Wait till it rains, a heavy one is good or water the ivy with lots of water and let it sit for an hour then come back water it again. Heavy rain and/or watering the area will loosen the soil and make it easier to get rid of the wretched ivy.
3) Get gloves, many trash bags, a painter's mask and full length old clothes with socks and shoes. Put on the clothes, gloves, and mask.
4) Take the bag and turn it inside out.
5) Put your hand with gloves into the trash bag and reach for the base of the ivy and pull the roots out. Make sure the vine do not touch your skin. Its the oil in the vine that causes the irritation and inflammation.
6) Work your way up the vine and not down it. You have to get the roots or else you will find yourself doing this again.
7) Repeat until bag is full. Then immediately turn the bag right side in and tie it securely.
8) After all the vine are gone. Take the trash bags and get ride of it. Carefully take off the gloves and throw that in the trash too. Don't let your fair skin touch it.
9) Take your clothes including socks and shoes and wash it in COLD water.
10) Take a shower in COLD water with plenty of soap.

After that inspect the area from time to time and use round up or some sort of weed spray.

It is a lot of work but you can win over the vine.

If you don't want to fight the battle call a landscaping company but they will just get rid of the vine and what you can see so you can call them again next year.

Good luck. Fight the good fight and win!

How To Kill Poison Ivy

You have 2 choices, either put on a space suit and manually pull the pest.. like the landscaper suggested, or use a product specifically for Poison ivy and woody bushes... Roundup has come out with a new line specifically for poison ivy, I used it in the morning then it rained, it didn't do the trick so I reapplied it on a very hot sunny day in the morning. Its taken 3 days and most of the vines are wilted, BUT still able to infect you with the oil. I have heard Cider vinegar or White vinegar works well on weeds don't know if it would work on the ivy... Good luck. ( from someone who has acres of the stuff)

Hi,
A good home remedy for poison ivy is chlorox. It does no damage to the environment and is sometimes used to pour in well water to purify. You can spray it on at full strength or can mix with water to dilute and cover a larger area. Caution: it will kill other plants as well. I'm sure you know about roundup which will kill just about anything but is more expensive and less environmentally friendly. Hope this brief suggestion helps.

use regular weed killer in a garden sprayer mixed with about a table spoon or so of Dawn dish washing soap. the soap will wash the oil from the leaves which allows the poision to get to the plant.. the amount of poision will determie the quickness of the death of the plant. it works I use it all the time

"Roundup" I don't know if it is available there, but it would certainly kill the ivy.
