I have many times. One of the neatest ones was when I was at 29 Palms in the Mojave. There was an artillery unit playing cards waiting to go to the range. Someone had left their lighter in the sun. It exploded. The soldiers all look at the direction of the 'pop' for about three seconds and then continued playing cards without a word. It was funny to watch because you would think that they were all thinking the same thing. As long as it wasn't a shell or propellant, there's nothing to worry about.

Yeah, its pretty funny (teenage years lol)
If its in direct sunlight or on something hot then yeah its going to explode.
When i was a teen me n my m8s use to get a buzz or throwing lighters top side down directly on the floor and they make a pop bang sound and blow up lol...

They can over heat, or if you throw the little plastic disposable ones on the ground hard, they'll blow up too...
