The old saying that "there are no stupid questions" is totally wrong, and encourages people to ask anything and everything that pops into their heads without thinking about it or reflecting on it's relevance. I'm thinking about the college classroom specifically, but this is the same in alot of every day situations. Like someone demanding to know "why" you don't belong to a certain religion, asking "why" you use the pill AND condoms for protection, and even tiny, simple things that get to be real repeated hassles. For example, someone at a restaurant asking the waitstaff where the restroom is even though there are signs all over the place, or asking how much a cold drink is when they could just look on the menu. Of course there are stupid questions asked in this forum because it's open and online and allows children and idiots free access.

Usually ther isn't a dumb question. DUMB is in the eyes of the beholder. Most people would be afraid to ask if their question would be looked upon as dumb. Also, what is dumb to you may very well be the root of what would make my day. In fact, I tell my students that even if you think it might be dumb ask it. Its better to be dumb than ignorant... in terms of asking questions thought to be dumb only by one or two persons. I think that there is no such thing as a dumb question!

I think there is such a thing as a dumb question. I mean you seem questions on here and your like "what? did that person really ask that?" So its more or less of common sense.

I don't think there are dumb questions. There are rude ones, immature ones, mean ones, and all other types. When a person asks what others perceive to be a 'dumb' question, they are being judgmental. Just skip over it or answer it objectively. Simple.

i think so, like asking a person what is their name and they have a name tag on that says their name plus it's easy to pronounce, theres a bunch of dumb questions out there but not enough time in the world to name them.
