There are many brilliant people with little or no money. Often being smart doesn't translate into the ability to earn a great deal of money.

I'm not sure what I could contribute if I was the smartest person .. cure for cancer? peace in the middle east? or just the next best video game?

If I was the richest person in the world, then I could use my wealth to hire the smartest person in the world, and the next 100 smartest, too .. then fund cancer research, donate to 'make a wish', provide good drinking water, food and vaccinations to the world's poorest countries, and so on.

I guess that I would prefer to be the richest, then.

That's a hard question. I've always been top in my class since I was in middle school. I'm now in graduate school, but because I come from a third world country where intelligence is not the key to sucess, (corruption and dirty money are the key), at this point I would tell you I would rather be the richest person. The gift God gave me intellectually will never be rewarded in third world countries, and even in the US, where I got my two Bachelor's degree and I'm doing my Master's, because I am not a US citizen so I do not have the freedom to work and show my potential in America. So, my answer is I'd have chosen to be the smartest person if I had been born in the US, but I would have chosen to be the richest person since I was born in a third world country.

The richest because with money, I could go to the best colleges in the world and become the smartest. :)

I'd be the smartest person in the world because if you had the brains and all that, then surely you would get noticed for it and then that would make you richer.

Id rather be smart and let the money follow than be rich and have no brains at all.

If I'm already the smartest, can I choose to be the richest too?

Smartest. The smartest person would be able to make a fortune but maybe not be the richest.

The backside; being smart you may no longer feel being rich is important, and focus on happiness instead.

I would be the smartest (wisest) person in the world. I would immediately set out to solving all the world's problems, or as many as I could. Then I'd get rich.

Smartest, because the money would follow. All the money in the world can't buy brains.
