Is it worth spending all of your time and effort writing a book, either fiction or non-fiction, for the very slim chance of getting it published?

I think that if you really wanted to write a book you wouldn't even be asking. Do what feels right. If you are feeling extremely passionate about writing, and you are willing to make a big commitment, then go for it, what can it hurt?

I would say yes, it is definitely worth writing a book. The publishing end of it is the difficult part. I suggest self publishing it or using Publish on Demand just to get it out there. (It is costly, though.) But, it is a great way to express yourself and who knows? You might hit it big!
I went with Author House, POD after examining the competition for weeks on end. I was pleased with the outcome. My book just came out entitled, "The Perfect Dress" and they did a great job with it.( www.thebookperfectdress.com) If I can help you, let me know. It is a complicated process and a learning of the "ropes" for all newcomers to the arena. Numerous data and books are written on the subject along with hundreds of blogs and sites of all sorts. Be sure and go with a reputable company. But, first write the darn thing! Good luck. It can be done.

Yes it's worth it because it's Your dream! No one can stop you from doing what you feel is important to you. I am also writing a book and like me even when in doubt, find comfort in the fact that these are my words and will not give up on my dream. Find the inner strength to move forward because if I put that much confidence in myself to write then I must be able to get it published as well. There are several publishers out there who is willing to make a buck from us writers so don't despair. Continue writing and give yourself a try before giving up when you haven't even reached that stage yet. You heard of the saying "cross that bridge when you get there"? Don't break the bridge before reaching it!

Yes, because writing a book is not just about telling a story. It can be about self-analysis, your views on life. Things that make you sad and things that make you happy. It starts with and idea, and if you have a passion for it writing, can be very satisfying. It can encourage you to research into history and other peoples lives.
Many people, as shown on these answers have written, and I'm sure most are very good. It's shame we'll never get to read a lot of their works.

I think if you're going to write a book, it should be because you have something to share: a story that has to be told, insights about life you want to share, or something like that.

I think writing should be a personal thing you do for yourself, and if you happen to get published later that's a bonus, but if that's the only point of writing the book, you'll probably end up dissapointed.

IF you feel passionate enough about it, you just write a book for the love of it. Some people just HAVE to write to destress, or they'd go nuts! Like me. I consider myself a writer...but of course not a published one. ;o)

It's like why do people play football even though there's a very slim chance of getting picked for a famous team and earning enough to make a living - of course there's always the hope of being good enough to get picked, but a lot of it's because they love and need to play football!

depends on why you'd write a book - because you have the story inside you, bursting at the seams? or to get famous/published/ whatever you want to call it?

i've been writing a book for a couple of years. still haven't finished it. when i finish it, i might try and get it published. but maybe not. i have to write it because the story's inside my head and all the characters have faces, rather than because i want to make a living from being an author.

if you'd write a book just to get it published, it'd better be pretty darn interesting ....

It is not. Ive written three books and all of them are more interesting than most of the books i've ever read. Literary agents will tell you that they haved not got the time to read your synopsis of the book, let alone your treasured book. Write a book and publish it yourself, it's expensive, you will not make money, but if you really want to, it's the only way. Tony.

writing a book? of course it is! i cant imagine the time and effort the authors put in to their book but the bs=est thing is that they've written a book. succeeded in something. You dont need to get published to make you think that writing a book isnt a waste of time.

I think you should enjoy writing the book, rather than write it for the sake of publishing. Writing is a wonderful way to get your thoughts out, and it shouldn't be something to do to get money. Writing should be fun.

I've written two books so far and have not yet appraoched a publisher or agent. For me, and I think for most writers, you write because you feel you need to, not because you want to make a lot of moeny at it. Ideally, I would be writing as a career, and I probably should be trying harder to do that, but I write everyday because I love to write.
