DO NOT USE OUTLOOK OR OUTLOOK EXPRESS for email. Go to a web based mail, such as yahoo. This way emails are automatically scanned and lessen the possibility of getting a virus. NEVER open any attachment if you don't recognize the sender, and even then, be careful. Sometimes friends forward viruses unaware. Yahoo is free, and I always use a web based mail service. I used mfire, or charter.net. This has saved my computer thousands of times

Its good to have a Computer and its even more important to protect your PC from malicious Virus .Do not open attachments from unknown sources and the mails you receive from your pals be scanned for virus.Yahoo mail automatically filters junk and viruses.
Do not use any free service like Spy bot they may remove a couple of Spy ware but they would in turn install some malware in your PC.Subscribe to Symantec's Norton Anti - Virus ,Mc Cafee they provide you updates and patches for the latest virus attacks .

Forget using Outlook or any other e-mail program on your computer. Use web-based mail such as Yahoo or Gmail (if you can get an invite). I've been using web-based mail since 1998 and I've never had any problems. Use common sense and don't download any attachments from anyone you don't know. Even from people you do know, it's good to be suspicious.

NEVER open a .exe file! Just delete the infected e-mails.

You didn't say what mail program you are using but if you are using Outlook express............
Open Outlook and click on tools at top. Then click on options.
Click on Security Tab and see if box is checked that says do not allow attachments to be saved or opened.
Make sure you have a virus control that will check incoming mail. A good one is from Grisoft called AVG and its free. It checks mail automatically coming in and going out for any virus's.

Because you have sent an email to somebody who has a virus on their computer. That virus has taken all the addresses from emails on their computer and is trying to spread itself among them.

You did the right thing in not opening the attachments.

You are probably getting spam email.
Ruthless people who have gained information on your email address have started to spam you. This is unfortunate, but hard to avoid.

Once they start coming, it's best to change your address. Make it something with a mix of numbers and letters, to make it harder for spammers to find you. EXAMPLE:
