Pleiades (star cluster)

The Pleiades (also known as M45 or the Seven Sisters) is an open cluster in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest to the Earth of all open clusters, probably the best known and certainly the most striking to the naked eye.

Hope this helps you!

"The Seven Sisters" is a name sometimes used to identify the Pleaides cluster, since it has seven visible stars. It's a name derived from the seven sisters who are friends of Artemis in Greek mythology.

The Japanese name for this constellation is "Subaru", and if you look at Subaru's trademark and vehicle "badge" next time you see a Subaru on the street, you'll see that it is, in fact, the Pleaides cluster!

I guess before television and the internet were invented, folks spent a lot of time staring at the sky!

Great question!

The Pleiades in Taurus, most people can only see six now, the seventh sister having dimmed with age. Some people see as many as eleven, without optical assistance, but look at it with a small telescope or binoculars, and you will be confronted with a mass of blue stars.
