I know how many can play during the World Cup, but how many actual countries have teams that are able to vie for the spot to make it to play in the world cup?

FIFA World Cup qualification is the process a team must go through to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Finals, or, more commonly known as the FIFA World Cup or Football World Cup. FIFA World Cup is a global event, and qualification is used to reduce the large field of participants from about 200 to 32.

Qualifying tournaments are held within the six FIFA continental zones (Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, Europe), and are organized by their respective confederations. For each tournament, FIFA decides beforehand the number of spots awarded to each of the continental zones, based on the relative strength of the confederations' teams (and, some may argue, political considerations).

The hosts of the World Cup receive an automatic berth in the finals. Unlike many other sports, results of the previous World Cups or of the continental championships are not taken into account. Until 2002, the defending champions also received an automatic berth, but starting from the 2006 World Cup they also need to enter qualifying.

In the qualification process for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, 198 teams from the six FIFA confederations were allocated a share of the 32 spots available on the basis of the strength of their teams. The final distribution was as follows:

Europe - represented by UEFA : 51 teams competing for 13 places (Germany qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 14 places)
Africa - the CAF : 51 teams, 5 places
South America - CONMEBOL : 10 teams, 4.5 places
Asia - the AFC : 39 teams, 4.5 places
North, Central American and Caribbean - CONCACAF : 34 teams, 3.5 places
Oceania - the OFC : 12 teams, 0.5 places (not guaranteed a position).
Each .5 indicates a place in inter-confederation matchups for the last two spots, namely playoffs between AFC and CONCACAF and between CONMEBOL and OFC.

Currently there are 205 teams that have been rated by FIFA. All of these teams are part of their Region's federation and so, all have the ability to participate in the qualification process. However, not all of the 205 teams take part for various reasons.

There are also 2 teams that have become members as of September 12 2005. These are East Timor and Comoros. They were not part of the qualification process for Germany 2006 because the process had been started much earlier. However they will be eligible to compete to participate in future World Cups.

Every country around the world is entitle to join the world cup. Before you get to see the 32 teams in the first round, those teams have played at least 12 times before they can even gt a final ticket to the first round of world cup.
