1. Cut off a thin layer of the Onion's epidermis with a razor or very sharp object.
2. Put it on a wet mount and put iodine on it.
3. Then observe under low or high power to see the cells.
4. Focus with the knobs of the microscope and turn slowly and carefully so you won't miss the details on the onion cells.

you could use iodine to stain a think slice of onion then use wet mount procedures to mount it on a slide. when you are looking at it under the light microscope first focus it in low power using the fine and course adjustment and then when you switch to high power only use the fine adjustment
