All in an attempt to get fouls called, yellow cards against the opposing teams.
Unfortunately it is a mark on the International game, but I'm glad to see the referee's starting to give out cards for diving or just letting the play continue.
It is up front and centre right now because of the financial rewards given to international teams as they continue to win. So the pressure is on to fall when they are overwhelmed by a defender to attract a free kick chance, or better yet to have an opposing player carded.
What about Hockey though?? You see the same thing in that sport where as soon as a player feels a stick anywhere on his body he falls to attract a call, or goalies that theatrically fall in a heap whenever an opposing player comes near his crease.
Diving isn't only in football.

I agree with you, I will say Argentina is the king of diving. FIFA has pushed the referees to punish those players for diving. Unfortunately, some innocent player are gettind carded as well.

diving in football , is for ball possession, control the flow of play, getting the penalty kick.. etc..players do it any way , in the hope of getting favourable judgement from linesman and referee.
