It doesn't have to "have" color ink, however you do need both a black and a colour cartridges installed in order for any newer model printer to work. Just leave an empty color cartridge in and set your printer setting to Grey scale or black only.

You may also want to go through the motions of installing the empty color cartridge as you would a new one. IE. Tell the printer you have installed a new cartridge. This will prevent any error or warning messages from popping up.

This sounds like the same printer my parents have. Because DELL doesn't manufacture anything, it is not actualla a "Dell". It is probably a Lexmark and if it has seperate blk and color ink cartidges it should print in either if one cartridge is empty. However my parents Dell printer went bad and would not print until "both" cartidges were not empty. Dell replaced that printer free of charge because they had only had it a couple of weeks.

You'd need both black and color ink cartridges to be in place but printing in black&white will use the black ink only.

If you happen to own a EPSON printer you cannot print in black if you have run out of any colored ink (it doesn't happen with some other brands, as to my knowledge).

Even if you are set to grey scale it will use colour ink. There is no setting that is going to allow you to use black only with that particular printer.

my printer will print in black only (select that in preferences), but you need to make sure the color cartridges are in there, even if they're empty
