There are three main ethnic/religious factions in Iraq. Each claims and occupies portions of the country. Some areas are hotly contested and have been the scene of some of the grizzliest massacres the Middle East has known over the last 50 years. The nations who fear a full blown civil war in Iraq, aside from the US, are Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Each has comitted substantial state resources to contain the escalating violence to Iraq proper, while at the same time using agents to stir their allies to press their claims more fervently.

The lessons of the segmentation of Yugoslavia are lost upon the US, its allies, the factions within Iraq and the neighboring states. Yet, there is no concerted effort being made to defeat the insurgent combatants (containment is not the same as defeating) and the violence, instablity and erosion of the central Iraq government accelerates. Water, power and sewer are more limited today than they were before the invasion.

In case I'm missed something... I see a civil war going on in Iraq at this very moment... that idiot Bush won't admit it, nor will Rummie... er... Rumsfield... but if a civil war is defined as people of a common nationality fighting over control of their country, then that looks, acts and smells like a civil war in Iraq.

As for ignoring the teaching of history... I hate to point this out but Americans don't KNOW history... their OWN or ANYONE ELSES... which is why they screw up ever time they invade a country... Americans are either too ignorant or too arrogant to learn from the mistakes of others... or their own mistakes, for that matter.

Reading one of the other responders brought to me a simple but profound fact about this question. Through the centuries there has been war and unrest, not only in Iraq, but throughout the Middle East. There is a reason that we in the U.S. are called a 'Civilized Nation'....for any Government or people to rest peacibly with one-another, there must be a heart of civility between them. There must be a understanding of God-given liberty to each individual. That is why so few countries survive in peace, and so many live in unrest. Civil war in Iraq would not only effect Iraq, but would turn the Middle East upside down. That is why there is so much interest being generated by bordering countries - which also control vast quantities of oil and riches. A people cannot be free unless they first see the need of the right to freedom and liberty for others.

Iraq may go back to having an unfair regime that only agrees with ine sect of Islam. or it could split (which i see highly unlikely, but possible). also, although they're not in a full blown out civil war, they are in a civil war now though many will not say they are. and they have been ever since Sadaam was no longer ruling over Iraq!

Take a country full of heavily armed idots who are motivated simply by thier religious beliefs and you are sure to have a civil war. Let them kill each other. I'll even supply all the virgins just as quick as I can cut em out of my herd.

These people have been fighting for centuries, with no end in sight. They will probably never become a civilized democracy, so let them just kill each other off and be done with it. American shouldn't try to save the whole pathetic world. We have enough problems right here.

lets put it this way.. if we go to war.. we dont only have the iraqies to watch for but the china will jump in it as well, and if they did watch out because we could lose this war. we should of wiped that country off the map, and made a parking lot out of that country when we had the chance. god bless our troops and their families
