The reason that Japan attacked Pearl Harbour was to keep the Imperialist US from competing with the imperialist interests of Japan. The U.S. had imposed trade embargoes on Japan that were crippling their economy and the only way that Japan could react to that was to attack the Pacific fleet thereby stopping the United States ability to respond to further expansion. As a Canadian I find it interesting that you Yanks think that you were the only ones attacked in the Pacific. European powers such as Britain France and the Netherlands also had economic and political bases in Asia at that time and they were also targeted to allow Japan to expand their plans of an "Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere". Japans alliance with Nazi Germany really had squat to do with their actions in the east except that with the western powers preoccupied by Germany's aggression, it was felt in Japan that a response would come to late and that the west would sue for peace

Thye wanted to sink the US Pacific fleet and prevent them from entering the war. This would have allowed Japan to dominate the Pacific Ocean.

I love the crap people come up with....The reason Japan decided to bomb the US was because of an Oil Trade Embargo. We stopped sending oil to Japan and it was hurting their economy.
