The higher levels of the german military were aware of the scope and magnitude of things. The enilisted men probably knew bits and pieces, but not the full picture, and were not in a position to change it since if they resisted, they would be shot.
Most of the german people were aware of a little what was going on, but also would be shot or put in camps if they tried to stand up for what was right. Many were killed for protesting it and trying to fight against it.
My mothers best friend when I was a kid, was the daughter of the mayor of Ulm Germany at the time. Her father stood up to the Nazi's and was shot and killed for his beliefs. My mom's friend, who was 14 at the time, was forced to stand naked in the snow in a bucket of cold water for hours as punishment since she was related. She was forced into a concentration camp, and ended up with tuberculosis. She survived, but the starvation and abuse effected her health for the rest of her life.
I have never met anyone that was prouder to be an American than she was. Sometimes we forget what we have.

Yea, after WWII, the American, English, French, and I think the Russians made the German population go through the concentration camps.

no.
the nazi administration had a policy called 'nacht und nebel' ('fog and darkness') iontended to confuse and mislead people about the scale and brutality of the 'final solution'.
they also ran a large concentration camp which wasn't a death camp at theresienstadt (just north of prague) so that when organisations such as the international red cross wanted to inspect a concentration camp they could be sent there.
(conditions were atrocious at theresienstadt whenever there was no inspection, but there were never gas chambers or ovens there).
the nazis even made a film 'the town we gave the jews' about how much fun it was living in theresienstadt. my father watched it as a little boy, and remembers wishing that he lived in a town with a football pitch on the village green.
two years ago my father visited theresienstadt - the czechs keep it as a war memorial now. he saw how people lived there - in bunk beds at fifty or sixt to a room. he read how no doctors or medical supplies were allowed into the settlement.
he still talks about it.

Mainly no. Any who did know had two options. 1, keep quiet. Or 2, get shot or sent to the Russian front for men or a concentration camp for women.
Dude, we'd have shut our mouths too. Solomon said that a rod is made for the back of a fool, well with that logic then a bullet is made for anyone who upsets a conquering army.
Correction----- Dudette.

The people who lived in the cities and towns that were located next to the death camps knew what was going or had an inkling what went on behind those gates and chose to ignore it. When British and US troops liberated the camps they actually had the German people haul bodies and bury the dead bringing them face-to-face with the horror they knew about.

Yes. Millions of people disappeared from Germany, and their property was given away or sold. What did the German people think was happening?
