You could do a base and acid mix and explain the reaction, such as vinegar and baking soda.

Also the erupting marshmallow mixture is pretty cool... and edible.

I remember doing something very simple like testing the pH of various common substances such as orange juice, milk, bleach, vinegar, etc.

testing which factors affect the rate of reaction for two substances like time, temperature, etc. For example you could say "To investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction between hydrochloric acid and marble chips"

Yeah, we always did the pH thing.
You could always throw some magnesium on a fire.
