Avoid doing things to other people that you certainly would'nt want done to you. It´s sort of putting yourself in the other person's shoes. Remember all those times when someone else has put you down, made fun of you, spread stories about you, betrayed your trust, stolen from you...how did you feel then? Remember how you felt and think that you possibly made others feel the same way because of something you've done. If you felt bad, it will make others feel bad as well. The fact that people do unkind things to us does not mean we can take it out on someone else. If you are kind to someone, someone will be kind to you. That´s a fact of life. A pastor or priest might help you with the theological aspects of this, but it´s just plain common sense. Good Luck.

This is the golden rule.

Unto is old wording so updated it is:

Don't do things to other people that you do not want them to do to you.

Reasoning: I think the ancient wisdom is that violence starts more violence and somewhat kindness starts more kindness.

Examples: Don't hit other people if you don't want other people to hit you.

While it is true that even if you are a good person, and don't hurt anyone, or hurt anyone's feelings, you and your feelings may still get hurt, it is also true that if you are a good person, you give yourself a great feeling knowing that about yourself, and that is really what counts. What you feel about yourself.

Looking over the other answers: I agree, the golden rule is "Do unto others that which you wish them to do unto you." even though the opposite still says close to the same thing.

Hope this helps.

don't make fun of someone unless you want them to make fun of you. treat people kindly as you would like to be treated.

that means to treat others the way that you want them to treat you.

in other words, don't sleep with a neighbors daughter unless you want them to sleep with your daughter
