Last time we went through the airport (two months go) it was $10,000 -- but why would you want to do that? It is so much easier to use a Visa or Mastercharge card. They are accepted anywhere and you can use them to get local currency wherever you are, or to pay bills like hotels and restaurants. You're taking a serious risk in travelling with that much cash, because there are bright-eyed thieves who will try to take it away from you. If your pocket is picked and your credit card is taken, you can report it and stop any charges being placed on it. If you lose cash, you're out of luck!
If you don't want to use a credit card, at least take travellers cheques!

I can't believe you would be stupid enough to carry that kind of money. Forget laws-you should be thinking about theft, or leaving your purse somewhere by accident if you are actually carrying it-if not...what about lost luggage or dishonest employees working the airports? Don't be stupid-any country that is civilized will take visa/mastercard/or discover. Have a few hundred in travelers check and a few in your purse, a little in your luggage, and the rest on plastic- it sure would suck for you to be stuck in a foriegn land without money---besides, why on earth do you need ten grand for a trip? Or even better-most banks in the U.S. can currency exchange from that country for you-exchange before you leave-it may be safer.

Sounds like a way to get yourself in trouble! You would have to go through customs 3 times, someone would stop you. Obviously a person travelling with $10,000 is up to no good.

Why in all that is good you want to travel with so much money in the first place ....never hear of plastic or travelers check?
You have to declare all that money to custom every port you stop ...and also you become a target for thieves..trust me they smell that green back from a mile away.

With the advent of ATM's (automated teller m/c's) and Credit Cards, you can buy practically anything under the sun, without carrying hard currency

You can carry $10,000 dollars, but you MUST declare it at every border. Otherwise, it is illegal.
