Depending on your state. Most require nothing. I cant say for sure though that all are that way. Check out your states Secretary of State website, and they can provide you with more information. Example of a search would be California Secretary of State, which is in this case http://www.ss.ca.gov
It would still be a good idea to set up a small corp, such as an LLC to offer you financial protection. Say for example your art work gives someone a paper cut and it gets infected and they die, your personal assets would be protected if you have set up a corp properly. Its not expensive to do (maybe $100-200) if you get a good book and do all the filings with your state yourself.
Good luck on your new company!!!
Edit: A business licence has nothing to do with filing or dealing with taxes... Unless of course you open a corp and have to pay corp taxes (LLC's taxes in California are $800 a year). You would just claim the income on your personal taxes under the MISC INCOME portion. If you have a Corp you will get a K-1 from that corp with your earnings.

nit at this time there isn't. if you have a business existing or want to start one. get a occupational license. many businesses sell their products inline all the time. you don't need a license to do it. their sales are apart of their regular business. some are just internet sales and they get a occupational license for the business itself as operating out of your home. you can sell anything you want on auction sites as everyone does it to get rid of items they don't want or to make extra money. as long as you are the owner of the item you can sell anything you want on the internet. if your wanting to sell some items just like a yardsale, you don't need anything. if your planning on opening up a web business, you would need to get a occupational license as the bussiness operating out of your home or as an example. janes art, your home address, etc. you can sell out of your home or on the net, but never list your address on the net. good luck!

If you are the original creator, you need not be afraid of selling your own product. Bt, if you sell the copy righted product without resale right or the permission of the creator, you are certainly in problem under the intellectual proerty rights Acts of the respective country.

First off, if you have a corporation or a company doing business in the city/county you have to have a business license.
If you are not a company or a corp. and are only doing personal business through another company like yahoo or ebay and many others, you are fine.

Technically, YES you need a business license but practically I rather doubt it. You need to have a bricks and mortar business for the tax police to sniff you out and slap you with fines.

This is no different then anywhere else. You probably need a business license to operate a business in your town. You must pay taxes.
