It is the 86th most common last name in China.

One of the orgins of the name comes from a man in chinese history who was exiled from his family by his mother for having too many concubines!

He moved and his decentants took Wan as thier surname. It was the banished man's first name.

Funny the name has become associated with royalty when it was originally a way to disassociate from an undesirable character!
