If the contraceptives r estrogen-based (which they are), apart from nausea and vomiting, there're steroid-related side effects (estrogen is derived from cholesterol, and hence the weight-gain) like glaucoma (pressure within eyes increases, which may reult in blindness), increased chances of getting diabetic, hypertension, heart-related problems, some forms of breast cancers (but this is somewhat controversial)..
But, nowadays, the contraceptive pills have lower amounts of estrogen and fewer such side-effects. There's indeed something known as progesterone-only pill, which does not have estrogen, but is probably less reliable a contraceptive. Do consult with some other source. Take care.

There are many side effects, mine were Migraines, nausea, intensified PMS symptoms, minor mood swings, and slight weight gain. I'm not sure if the last one was because of the pill, I gained 7 lbs in a year, not so bad, but not good either... :(
Migraines went away within like, 4-5 months and the nausea was only within the first few months. I still get nausea every once in a while but that isn't too bad.
Overall not so bad, but only because the migraines went away...
(I take Ortho-Trycycline Lo)

It effects all people differently, mine were depression, sickness and weight gain. if you are having side effects, you need to see your GP who can recommend a more suitable type for you.
