My poor wife gave birth to twins in 2004, and I still remember how she suffered thru the last 2 1/2 months. The boy and girl were born 2 weeks shy of due date.

The doctor really could only recommend "Tums" and calcium based type products. I've wondered though if Tums could have been counter-productive, in the sense that it just caused more acid to be produced 1/2 hour later.

I guess we'll never really know. But I'd say you're pretty much stuck with the heartburn.

Tums, Rolaids and Mylanta all provide some relief, but if yours is anything like mine was, that's not going to completely take care of it.

Definitely ask your doctor next time you're there if there's anything else you could try/take. I found that some activities and foods definitely made the heartburn worse. Don't lie flat on your back (raise your head up on some pillows), avoid not only spicy and fried foods, but also acidic foods (lemonade gave me worse heartburn than anything) and eat small frequent meals. Also, an occasional glass of milk helped, believe it or not.

OMG just dont kill yourself. I know what its like to have heartburn so bad I cried at times with my son and now with my daughter I am starting to get it just as bad. All I do it take tums and drink milk. The milk helps a little, nothing will ever make it better. You should ask your Dr. first, but with my son they said I could take Mylanta. You have to ask what kind and DO NOT take Pepto Bismol, there is something in there that isnt good for ur baby. Good luck , at least you only have a couple months left :)

yup I've got tips, with both of my daughters I had horrible heartburn, with number one my doctor didn't tell me that I could get a prescription for heartburn so I suffered my way through my pregnancy, munching on 15 to 30 TUMS a day, and sleeping upright every night :( With my second daughter, I had a different doctor, and as soon as I told him I had heartburn he gave me something for it, and I took that every day before I ate, and again before I went to bed, I have to say I was MUCH more comfortable with number two. Basically you can follow the "rules" for heartburn and not eat spicey foods, eat little meals frequently, etc...but really all you need is a prescription.

I feel for you! I'm 38 weeks and ended up with heartburn about the same time as you. I can swallow air and get heartburn at this point! I finally spoke with my doctor and he recommended Pepcid Ac since it's not suppose to be harmful to the baby. It takes the edge off but doesn't completely take it away. Talk with you physician before you start taking anything!

Years ago they used to say coffee ground on the tip of your finger and then put this amount into your mouth would relieve heartburn. I personally did not care for it. Check with your doctor, he should be able to give you something for heartburn. Also just think the more heartburn the more hair on your baby's head.

Try eating smaller meals & waiting at least a half hour before laying down after eating. Also keep track of wether it is certain foods that give you the heartburn, and then skip eating them like spicey or salty.

My OB told me to take over-the-counter Zantac. And she told me to take 150mg a day, if I needed to, which was a higher dose than the package instructions.

She also told me to keep Maalox in the refrigerator, and to take that when necessary. (The cold really seems to make a difference.) You can take Maalox many, many times a day.

When neither Zantac nor Maalox was helping anymore, she gave me a prescription for Prevacid. Problem solved. One little pill a day, and I never had heartburn again.

Gaviscon liquid worked the best for me - it's a bit gloopy! but it does work. Strangely enough kids sweets called refreshers (they are fruity fizzy things) seemed to help a Little bit but not if it was serious. Luckily after the baby was born I have never had it since.

You should take Tums, your body needs the calcium anyway, just ask your doctor up to how many you can take a day, (usually they agree with what is on the back of the bottle), never hurts to ask though.
