Unfortunately, I have been in this situation. Last year my son, then 15, had a fit and broke several pieces of furniture in my house. I called the police. He was arrested. He received a "good talking too" from a very scary probation officer and community service. He also went to anger management. He is much, much better now.

Several years ago the son of a FBI agent committed a murder and this FBI agent was assigned to work the case. When he found out his son had committed this murder, he had a choice to make. He turned his son in. The FBI agent cried and cried and said it was the hardest thing he has ever had to do and for days and days he struggled with the decision but in the end he knew it had to be done. Being a parent, I felt that man's pain in making this decision.

Yes because ultimately children need to be responsible for their actions and face up to the consequences , whatever they may be.
But first I would encourage them to turn themselves in and give them the opportunity to do so

"something really bad" is pretty vague. Are you talking about rape, murder, stealing, dealing drugs...??
Would I turn my own child(ren) in... yes. If they are in trouble, then they need help. You can't let them get away with breaking the law.
If it was a random kid that caused you harm, hit-and-run, sold your kid drugs, stole, etc... you'd want them prosecuted, wouldn't you?

i think you should talk to them first and try to convince him/her to step up and take resposibility on thier own...if that doesnt work, then ypu should probably turn them in. might be better off in the long run.
