Does this bug anyone else?
Lorelei's name totally fits her, it's definitely her own. Rory's fits her too, yet her real name is Lorelei. I get all that.
So WHY do the writers decide to make Richard's bitter, selfish mother the "original" Lorelei? Why would they want to take away Loreleis' name like that and give it to that woman?
anyone else?

i realize this is random.

It's not odd that the CHARACTERS would name her that, but that the WRITERS would choose to associate Lorelei's fun name with such a rude woman.
Plus, that Emily would give her consent.

yea i agree because it's like it's not lorelei's own name anymore--she has it in the memory of a mean old woman

it's realistic, i guess, of the family to do that but it's still annoying cuz i hate richard's m om, and how he never sticks up for emily. lorelei's n ame should be her own.

I think that Richard and Emily probably named Lorelei after her mean old grandmother because they wanted their child to be well brought-up, mannered, successful, and disciplined like her. Lorelei actually rebelled against her parents and their way of life and gave new meaning to the name.

She is named after her grandmother what is so odd about that ? Lots of people are named after relatives. I'm kind of shocked that Emily named her daughter after someone she never got along with but maybe it's what Richard wanted.

I think it's because although that is true about Lorelai the first (Trix) they named Lorelai the 2nd Lorelai because Richard loves his mother so much.

And I agree that the name Lorelai really does fit her. I can't see her being named a name that you hear every day. I love that name though!

It is common place to do this in rich well-bred families to honor the person the child is being named after.

No, it doesn't bother me.
