The French seem to have rediscovered the use of the shower somewhere in the late 1700's. It spread to the British, and America later. Although bathing was not a high priority until around 1900 on a large scale, it would be reasonable for such a thing to be used in the 1860'2. Metal: brass, bronze, maybe copper, would be the material of choice, as good old plastic wasn't yet around!
