It is expensive, but when I my own business, just the phone number listing in bold type in the yellow pages generated 1 or 2 extra calls a month. These new customers tended to be long term clients.

The Yellow Pages are a business themselves; just like any other business. And their goal is to make as much $$ as possible. The more they charge, the higher their profits.

Because businesses are willing to pay those prices for the advertising. If they were too expensive, businesses would not purchase the ads, and the yellow pages would be forced to lower their prices to make a profit.

Most businesses do not have goodwill in mind when they provide their goods & services. Only maximizing their profits. They will charge as much as they can get away with to do so.

Because the Yellow page publishers accounts become red after publishing the same, and the yellow pages are distributed free to the users in the interest of the advertisers of the yellowpages.

IT only seems to be costly. When you consider that your advertising isn't available just one month, or one day but that it is potentially available for more than one year, the cost versus value ratio changes.
Additionally it is very expensive to print paper in the quanity that the yellow pages does. They provide one or more books per household and business for EVERYONE in your area regardless of the phone service those locations have.
It would be a great idea for SWB and other yellowpage providers to provide a purely electronic web version option for those business who can't yet afford the yellowpage listing.

This is due to the dye used in the paper - If they used regular white paper the cost of advetising would drop by 90% but will they listen ? No ! They recon people only advertise with them in the first place is because yellow is their favorite colour .

every subscriber gets a book so ad penetration is a really high percentage - not 100% because some people are now using cells as their primqary phone and some people don't have phones but i'll bet penetration is over 90%

If you place a $100.00 Ad for a year and you get a $1000.00 job in a year and you make $150.00 in that job.

Did it cost you any money?

How many jobs do you need to sell in a year to pay for the ad?
