Five years ago, I would have said they were liberal liars who simply hated America.
Today, I would say they're pretty much spot on. Over the past 5 years, I have watched in horror as the US trounces human rights, civil liberties, and the protections of the US Constitution - and Americans still re-elected this President. By a slim margin, true, but that even 50% of us still thought what he was doing was by any means appropriate is to me, perfectly disastrous.
Americans will never stand up for what it means to be American so long as they have bread and circuses - that is what Roman emperors called 'appeasement of the masses' - so long as they had enough to eat, and entertainment, the Roman citizenry allowed their government to get away with all sorts of atrocities.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it. America. What a waste of opportunity.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.
Yes you and they are Right the 24hr news is just that they make up the hysteria and control what we see and hear. You will get more news and it will be better news if you turn off the sound and read the stuff on the ticker on the bottom.
They are calling all of us Idiots and it would be true if you fall for the news propaganda.
If you want to know the truth you must dig for it or ask a man home from Iraq.
Blueeyz45 they were taking about you. your statement shows you are right where the news outlets have lead you.

Maybe I don't count as a person, but I don't like "at least one song from it". It's heavy handed, the "story" is awful, and the music is mediocre at best. And if all Green Day fans are like you, I don't think highly of them. Also, I dont think "sheepish" means what you think it does.

I agree with certain aspects of it, and definately love the song. We are being kinda brainwashed by the media, simply because that's our main source of news and entertainment in this generation. But, there are certain parts that I don't agree with.
I can't help but laugh at how upset people got about it though. Hello, it's GREEN DAY. Of course they're going to put out things that are "controversial." That's what they always do, and they're millionaires because of it.

I totally agree. I love that song.
I would also add "Junior, " and "Big Eyeball in the Sky" By "Colonel Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains" (if you know who they are) is right on too.
You can guess who this is about.
-------------------------------------
JUNIOR
Yee Haw!
Look at him go
Look at that sonab!tch go!
There is a boy named Junior
Playing Uncle Sam
Got a master plan
Like Vietnam
Don't give a good goddamn about Saddam
Gonna drink his oil right out the can
Look at him go
Throwing cash around like it's made of dirt
God made dirt and dirt don't hurt
Gets that monkey on the back of his shirt
Once that 10-40 starts to spurt
Look at him go
I do say
Quite an interesting situation you all have there
I'm not sure if he's mad
Or slightly off center
It's amusing from my perspective
In sort of a frightening way
Ding ding dong dong
Ding ding dong dong
Look at him go
Now if you give him half a chance
He'll surely impress you with his dance
Maybe even reach on down in your pants
Give you some greasy ol' romance
Look at him go
------------------------------------
THE BIG EYE BALL IN THE SKY
Believe in the lie
Of the big eye ball in the sky
Billy, watch what your saying
Billy, watch what you do
Billy, best lay back and watch the wide screen
Believin' all of it's true
They're comin' through the dishes
And through the billboards too
They own that gas you're pumping out
And soon they're gonna own both Billy and you
Believe in the lie
Of the big eye ball in the sky
Susie on the computer
Susie in the commode
Susie stuck her fingers down her throat
After chowing down a big bowl of rocky-road
In the pages of Cosmo
They like 'em waify and thin
Now wouldn't it be nice if Calvin Klein
Helped Susie wipe the vomit from her chin
Believe in the lie
Of the big eye ball in the sky
Now Granny likes her media
She likes it nice and hard
When her soaps are on TV
She buys it by the yard
Gramps is in the room
Saying it's a bunch of crap
Watching football games for hours
With tortillas on his lap
Now me I like my media
I like it nice and thick
Throwing options at the walls
To see which ones will stick
But to formulate opinions
From what I see, is a joke
Because American TV's owned by Pepsi
And by Coke
Believe in the lie
Of the big eye ball in the sky
---------------------------------------

The lyrics to "American Idiot" are amateurish compared to a song like "New World Man" by Rush.
Just a small sample:
He's got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He's old enough to know what's right
But young enough not to choose it
He's noble enough to win the world
But weak enough to lose it
He's a New World Man...
-------------------------------------------------------------
How about their song, Subdivisions?
Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
----------------------------------------------------------------
Rush has the most amazing lyrics. In music, there are geniuses and hacks. Patti Smith is a genius. Neil Young has flashes of genius, but some of his protest lyrics are just embarrassingly childish.
