If there's food in it, the food goes bad. If it's empty, residual detritus from past use smells bad. You should wash the empty fridge with ammonia and let it stand open. Check all trays and the drip pans and make sure that they are also very clean. If You can remove the shelves, drawers, etc., wash them down and then set them outside to air dry. Make certain that there are no stains or dried up drips left on them. This should solve the problem.

The air inside has pretty much died and mixed with the stink of the refrigerator itself.The fridge has a smell to it and you do not notice it when it is plugged in and operating.
Put those two things together and POW:it stinks!

Fridge doesn't stay cold just because it is closed so mold and bacteria take over and create the odor.
