How do I keep green stuff from growing in the bottom of my bird bath (without scrubbing it out everyday!)?

Will vinegar do the trick?

First, scrub it out with bleach to clear out the algae (the green stuff). Rinse it well, then whenever you fill it, put a few drops of bleach in the water. It won't hurt the birds (just a few drops) and it will stop or slow down the growth of algae.

Bleaching the bird bath will remove the algae. A little bleach in the water will help keep it away. Chlorine is what keeps swimming pools free of algae. Besides, the chlorine will evaporate in a few hours anyway. I learned this when I had goldfish. The reason most of those goldfish that kids win at the fair die is because people used tap water containing chlorine. If they only set the water out overnight, their fish would have lived much longer.

Standing water will always produce algie. Just take a hose with a spray nozzle and spray way the algie a couple times a week. you could also add 1 tablespoon of bleach to 3 gallons of water and use that for the bird bath it will not harm the birds. Our tap water has much worse in it.... good luck

Vinegar will get rid of the algae, but I don't think it will prevent the problem from recurring.Leave the algae on, it will add character to the bird bath, and the birds won't mind either.

Do not add bleach! Use a plain brillo pad once in awhile and change the water daily.
