Show your friend that your capable of doing a proper job by helping her out in her daily routine with the infant. Once your friend see's how you interact with the infant she's likely to change her mind. You could also try talking to your friend and letting her know your feelings were hurt and that you in no way would ever intentionally do anything to harm her child and that you would like to give her a chance to prove your capability with her present.

Why not ask the mother directly why she felt that you couldn't watch the child adequately? Explain to her your place in your own family and the responsibilities that came with your birth order...
If you're male (avator) ask her if that is the reasoning..Perhaps she's too old school to realize that men CAN step up to the plate and care for a child...

Just let it go. The friends mom doesn't know you as well as you know yourself. If your friends didn't stick up for you ask them nicely why.

just let it slide. trying to convince them otherwise will make you look like a fool. new parents and grandparents are an odd bunch anyway. just smile and nod.

People can be totally freaked out about their babies. Don't take it too personally.
