The name comes from 'holt land' which ment 'wooded land'. (nowadays the word for 'wood' in Dutch is 'hout', and many people believe that the names means 'hol land' which you can translate as 'hollow land'.
The name is given in the year of 1706 by a count called 'count Dirk the 5th'.
Holland is not really an other name of the Netherlands, it is a name for a part of the Netherlands. In history it was a seperate county.

Holland is only a small part of the Netherlands and like the Dakotas, Carolinas and Virginias, there are two Hollands. There's a little more on the history below.

Back in the days when dutch ships roamed the sea and discovered new lands, the ships always sailed from the part of the Netherlands called : Holland. so when the sailors were asked were they were from they would say: Holland. So eventually the whole country came known as Holland. By the way, hol and nether both means: low, as most of the country is below sea level.

It was discovered by a man whose name was Jackob Hol, and he named it after himself.
Later on the people politely told him they had been living there for years, and hence it was already discovered; and that the real name is Nether. Whereupon he asked them how come they speak Dutch.
Incidently, Jackob Hol's cousin Hans once came to visit the new land that Jackob had told him about, and when he got off the train every time he tried to strike up a conversation with somebody (being the affable sort that he was) the reply would be "Kanit verstan." Everybody always said the same thing to him, and it so unnerved him, that he turned around and caught the very next train back to Germany and never set foot in Netherland again, much to the dismay of Jackob Hol.

Holland is actually just a region of the Netherlands, not all of the Netherlands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland
